En Gold: Reviving the Lost Art of Fossil Stone Furniture in Cebu

En Gold, founded by Steffanie Ball, has reignited the fossil stone furniture industry in Cebu, Philippines, creating over 100 jobs and preserving a unique Filipino craft. This furniture, made from fossilized limestone, showcases the beauty of organic materials and natural imperfections. En Gold’s commitment to responsible sourcing and minimal waste ensures the sustainability of the industry and its impact on the community.

Ball’s journey with fossil stone furniture began in Australia, where she discovered its unique aesthetic. She later traced its origins to Cebu and partnered with Jerry Caniza, a Filipino craftsman whose workshop produced some of the very pieces she collected. Recognizing the potential to revive this lost art, they launched En Gold in 2020.

En Gold’s furniture is hand-crafted using limestone quarried sustainably in Carmen, Cebu. The unique markings on each piece, from fossilized marine organisms to the artisans’ finishing touches, make every creation unique. To minimize waste, even small chips of stone are repurposed in the company’s Stonecast outdoor collection.

Beyond its economic impact, En Gold is deeply committed to giving back to the community. Through the Hiraya Foundation, the company supports feeding programs, donation drives, and educational initiatives. They also collaborated with Romblon-based designer Vianca Soleil to create a stone vase benefiting the elementary school children of Puro Island.

Each En Gold piece comes with a booklet detailing its journey from the quarry to the production floor, emphasizing the craftsmanship and connection to its origins. Ball believes that this transparency fosters a deeper appreciation for the furniture and its story.

En Gold’s designs prioritize longevity and timelessness, ensuring that their creations remain relevant and cherished. The company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility extends throughout its operations, from responsible sourcing to community engagement. As Ball puts it, their legacy is about preserving the craft and empowering the artisans who bring it to life.
