A tragic incident unfolded in Potheri, on the outskirts of Chennai, where a 22-year-old engineering student, Konda Srinivasa Nikhil from Telangana, died by suicide on Tuesday night. Nikhil, who was pursuing a B Tech course at a private engineering college in the area, took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of an apartment building.
The incident occurred just two days after a police team from the Tambaram commissionerate conducted a raid on several gated communities in Potheri, primarily occupied by engineering college students. The raid resulted in the seizure of marijuana, leading to the questioning of 24 students, including Nikhil. While no case was registered against him, he was asked to provide a written statement and subsequently released. However, sources indicated that Nikhil had been experiencing depression since the police encounter.
On Tuesday night, he climbed to the fourth floor of the apartment building and jumped off, leaving security guards to alert his friends. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. This incident highlights the potential mental health implications of police actions, even when no formal charges are filed. The case underscores the need for authorities to consider the impact of such encounters on individuals and to provide appropriate support for those who may be affected.
