England continued its aggressive batting approach in the second Test against the West Indies on Thursday, achieving a remarkable feat in the process. The team recorded the fastest-ever fifty runs in Test cricket history, surpassing its own record set back in 1994.
Opener Ben Duckett, who was in scintillating form, raced to 33 runs off just 14 balls. He was ably supported by Ollie Pope, who remained unbeaten on 16 off 9 deliveries. Together, the duo smashed 10 boundaries, propelling England to the milestone in a blistering 4.2 overs.
This achievement eclipses England’s previous record of reaching 50 runs in 4.3 overs, which was set against South Africa at The Oval in 1994. Interestingly, England holds the top three positions in the list of fastest team fifties. Their third fastest fifty came against Sri Lanka in 5 overs during a Test match at Old Trafford in Manchester back in 2002.
Sri Lanka occupies the fourth position in this prestigious list, having achieved the feat in 5.2 overs against Pakistan in Karachi in 2004. Meanwhile, India holds the fifth position with two opening stands of 50 runs in just 5.3 overs. The first instance occurred against England in Chennai in 2008, and the second against the West Indies in Port of Spain in 2023.
England’s aggressive batting display has sent a strong message to the West Indies, highlighting the team’s intent to dominate the match and secure a series win. The first day of the second Test has already witnessed a thrilling start, with England setting the tone with their record-breaking performance.
