England’s esteemed goalkeeper, Mary Earps, is set to depart Manchester United after a five-year tenure with the Women’s Super League (WSL) club. The announcement came on Saturday, with British media reports suggesting a potential move to Paris St Germain could be in the works.
Earps, a former Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, and Reading keeper, joined United in 2019. She quickly established herself as a dominant force, achieving a WSL record of 14 clean sheets in the 2022-23 season, before contributing to the team’s historic victory in the 2024 Women’s FA Cup, their first major trophy. The 31-year-old also holds the remarkable distinction of having the most clean sheets in WSL history, with an impressive tally of 56.
In an emotional Instagram post, Earps shared her decision to seek a new challenge, explaining that the club’s upcoming transitional phase did not align with her current career aspirations. “I have decided that it’s time for a new challenge. It’s a decision I’ve gone backwards and forwards on for some time, and is not one I’ve made lightly,” Earps wrote. “The club is about to undergo a period of transition and unfortunately I don’t feel it aligns with the timing of where I’m at in my career.”
United, in a statement, expressed their gratitude for Earps’ contributions and wished her well in her future endeavors. “Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Mary for her fine service,” the statement read, adding that this marks the third major departure this week after midfielder and captain Katie Zelem and forward Lucia Garcia.
Earps, who has donned the England jersey 50 times, recently missed this month’s Euro 2025 qualifying match against France due to a hip injury. However, she remains a key member of the squad and is expected to feature in the upcoming matches against Ireland and Sweden in July.
