While the victory was a welcome sight, interim manager Lee Carsley remained steadfast in his commitment to his temporary role, emphasizing that he is not seeking the permanent managerial position.
Goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice secured the win at Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Despite the positive result, Carsley remained cautious when questioned about his future. “This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies, and I am still on the path to that,” he stated. He reiterated his commitment to his six-game mandate, acknowledging the privilege of the position while expressing disappointment over the recent loss to Greece. “I’m not used to losing in an England team, I don’t take losing well,” he said.
However, Grealish and Rice were vocal in their support for their interim boss, highlighting his positive impact on the team. Rice praised Carsley’s honesty and openness, attributing the team’s good form to his emphasis on playing with freedom. “There’s going to be bumps along the way, that’s football, it’s an up and down sport, nothing is ever going to be perfect,” Rice acknowledged.

Despite being left out of Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024, Grealish has thrived under Carsley, scoring two goals in his brief tenure. “Whatever happens with the England manager, people will always say negative stuff,” Grealish said. “Before people were crying out for all attacking players to play and it didn’t work (on Thursday versus Greece). I don’t get it, it can happen in games. I love coming here, a top, top manager, and I love playing for him.”
