England returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-1 victory over Finland in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday, putting behind them the shock 2-1 home loss to Greece on Thursday. Goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice sealed the win in Helsinki, marking the third victory in four games under interim manager Lee Carsley.
The win could strengthen Carsley’s case to take on the role permanently, especially after the defeat to Greece, which had raised concerns about his suitability. The loss to Greece had come after England fielded an experimental team, but even with the win over Finland, some questions will linger.
Despite being ranked 60 places higher than Finland (who are ranked 64th), England found themselves facing a close match. A few more errant finishes by the Finnish side could have made for a more uncomfortable evening for the Three Lions.
Grealish opened the scoring in the 18th minute at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, slotting the ball home after receiving a clever flick from Angel Gomes. Alexander-Arnold doubled the lead in the 74th minute with a trademark free kick, while Rice converted a cross from substitute Ollie Watkins in the 86th minute to secure the victory. Arttu Hoskonen scored a consolation goal for Finland in the 87th minute.
With the win, England sits second in Group B2, trailing leaders Greece on goal difference, but having played a game more.
