Matthew Mott has stepped down as the head coach of England’s men’s white-ball cricket team, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday. The decision follows England’s disappointing exit at the semi-final stage of the recent ICC T20 World Cup, where they were defeated by eventual champions India.
Mott, who was appointed to the role in 2022, guided England to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia the following year, defeating Pakistan in the final. He has now decided to step aside, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick taking over on an interim basis.
Trescothick’s first assignment will be a multi-format series against Australia, consisting of three T20Is and five ODIs, scheduled to take place between September 11th and 29th.
In a statement released by the ECB, Mott expressed his pride in coaching the England Men’s team, stating that he and the team had given their all to achieve success over the past two years. He praised the team’s character and passion during his tenure, highlighting the T20 World Cup victory in 2022.
Trescothick, upon taking on the interim role, expressed his excitement about working with Jos Buttler, the players, and coaches over the next few weeks. He emphasized the focus on building towards the upcoming series against Australia and planning for next year’s Champions Trophy campaign.
