English Referees Michael Oliver, Anthony Taylor Selected for Euro 2024

UEFA has selected English referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor to officiate at Euro 2024, while Stuart Attwell will serve as a video assistant referee (VAR). This decision follows Nottingham Forest’s recent questioning of Attwell’s integrity after their defeat to Everton, where three of their penalty appeals were rejected with Attwell as the VAR. Taylor has become a prominent referee for UEFA, having officiated at Euro 2020, the Europa League final, and the Nations League final. Oliver has also had significant assignments, including the 2022 European Super Cup final and high-profile Champions League matches. The selected referees are highly regarded by UEFA’s managing director of refereeing, Roberto Rosetti, who praised their consistent performance at the highest level. All officials will attend a preparatory course in Frankfurt in May, with Argentinian referee Facundo Tello set to officiate matches in a departure from tradition. The inclusion of English assistant referees will provide additional support to Taylor and Oliver’s refereeing teams. The appointment of these officials reflects the high regard in which English referees are held by UEFA. Their selection is a testament to their ability and experience, and they will undoubtedly play a vital role in the successful conduct of Euro 2024.
