Santiago Espinal’s offensive performance, including two RBIs in the decisive four-run sixth inning, played a significant role in the Cincinnati Reds’ 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. Espinal’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning drove in another run, solidifying the Reds’ lead.
Reliever Fernando Cruz’s timely pitching in the seventh inning, inheriting runners on second and third with only one out, proved critical in defusing a potential Phillies rally. Elly De La Cruz’s impressive three hits and three stolen bases further contributed to the Reds’ success.
Reds starter Nick Lodolo, despite allowing three runs and six hits in his five-inning outing, managed four strikeouts and three walks. However, it was the bullpen’s effort, particularly Cruz’s, that ultimately secured the win.
The loss marked the second consecutive defeat for the Phillies, who had won the series opener on Monday. Despite starter Spencer Turnbull’s excellent outing, allowing only one run and three hits over five innings, the Phillies’ offense faltered. Turnbull’s impressive start to the season continues, with only four earned runs and 13 hits allowed in his first five starts, spanning 27 innings.
In the eighth inning, Elly De La Cruz singled, stole second and third, and eventually scored on Spencer Steer’s fly ball, extending the Reds’ lead.
The series finale on Thursday afternoon will feature Phillies’ right-hander Zack Wheeler facing off against Reds’ right-hander Nick Martinez.
