Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has accused the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of “preparing for a world war” in response to the deteriorating situation in Ukraine.
“Brussels is reacting to the increasingly deteriorating situation for Ukraine at the front by preparing for a world war,” Szijjarto told Hungarian TV at a press conference after a meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers in Luxembourg, where much of the discussion centered around sending more ammunition and weapons to Ukraine.
Szijjarto criticized the constant supply of weapons to Ukraine, arguing that it only prolongs the conflict and increases the risk of a wider war. He also questioned the effectiveness of this strategy, as it has not yielded positive results in the past.
Szijjarto believes that the worsening situation on the battlefield should motivate Ukraine to seek peace. He stressed that any peace negotiations must involve both sides and cannot be organized without Russia’s participation. Hungary, he said, has no intention of participating in EU or NATO efforts to coordinate more military assistance to Ukraine.
Szijjarto also expressed hope that the upcoming US presidential elections in November would bring about a change in policy towards the Ukraine conflict. He said that every “peace-loving person in Europe” is waiting for Donald Trump’s victory and believes that he would stop the conflict within days if elected.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has openly endorsed Trump’s presidential bid, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that keeping Joe Biden in the White House would be the best outcome for Moscow’s interests.
