EU Announces $1 Billion Aid Package for Lebanon

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a $1 billion aid package for Lebanon during a visit to the country. The aid is intended to bolster basic services like education and health, and is part of the EU’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s socio-economic stability.

Von der Leyen emphasized the need for reforms, stating that Lebanon requires a positive economic momentum to create opportunities for businesses and citizens. The EU also expressed its commitment to maintaining legal pathways for refugees to Europe, while calling for cooperation in preventing illegal migration and combating migrant smuggling.

Lebanon has been facing a prolonged financial crisis, heightened by border clashes between Hezbollah and Israel. The country remains without a president and is led by a caretaker government with limited powers due to political deadlock.
