EU Takes Action Against TikTok Lite Rewards Program

EU Opens Proceedings Against TikTok Lite Rewards Program

The European Union has launched proceedings against TikTok and threatened to suspend its recently launched TikTok Lite rewards program. The program allows users to earn points for activities such as watching videos and inviting friends to the app.

The EU’s executive arm, the European Commission, has given TikTok 24 hours to provide a risk assessment report for TikTok Lite or face fines. The social media app has also been given until May 3 to provide further requested information.

The EU is concerned about potential risks to users under the Digital Services Act, which requires online platforms to assess and address risks to their users.

“The Commission has opened a compliance case that urges TikTok to submit an assessment and provide more information on how it is protecting its users from potential risks on their platform,” said Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust chief.
