## European Travel Booms: Autumn and Winter 2024/25 See a Surge in Travel Sentiment
Get ready for a wave of European travelers this autumn and winter! New research from the European Travel Commission (ETC) reveals a significant surge in travel sentiment, with a whopping 73% of Europeans planning trips between October 2024 and March 2025. This represents a 6% increase from the same period last year, demonstrating a clear desire to explore the continent after the peak summer months.
Younger Travelers Lead the Charge
The data shows a particularly strong enthusiasm among younger Europeans. Travel intentions among the 25-34 age group have risen to 75%, a 9% year-on-year increase. This trend is mirrored in other age groups, with 64% of 18-24-year-olds and 78% of those aged 35-44 also planning to travel this autumn and winter. Younger travelers are particularly interested in City Breaks and relaxing Sun & Beach vacations, highlighting a shift towards more adventurous and budget-friendly travel options.
Older Travelers Seek Culture and Nature
While younger generations are eager to explore new destinations, older travelers in Europe are also eager to hit the road. 75% of those aged 55 and over express a desire to travel, a 4% increase from last year. These travelers are particularly interested in longer trips, with almost half (45%) planning trips lasting more than seven nights. Their focus leans towards experiences rich in Culture & Heritage or Nature & Outdoors, suggesting a preference for familiar destinations with established tourist infrastructures.
Hidden Gems Gaining Popularity
While Europe’s most popular destinations, like Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Greece, continue to attract travelers, there’s a growing trend towards exploring lesser-known spots. 51% of respondents are shifting their focus to less touristy locations, with 38% specifically seeking out areas with less tourist crowds and 18% aiming for remote, ‘new’ areas with minimal infrastructure. This trend is particularly strong among younger generations, who are leading the charge towards off-the-beaten-path experiences. Polish, Spanish, and Dutch travelers are particularly leading the shift toward discovering hidden gems.
Travel Budgets on the Rise
Despite rising inflation, European travelers are showing less concern about travel costs. Only 19% express worries about trip expenses, a 3% drop from the previous year. The most common budget, selected by 27% of travelers, is €500-€1,000 per person per trip. Notably, 26% plan to spend a higher amount of €1,500 to €2,500, reflecting a 3% increase from last year. This suggests a growing willingness to invest in travel experiences.
Safety and Stable Weather Top Travel Priorities
When selecting holiday destinations, safety reigns supreme for 18% of Europeans. Stable weather and bargains come in at a close second, both at 12%. Friendly, welcoming locals are also a priority for 10% of travelers. These findings highlight the importance of travel safety, predictability, and cultural experience for European travelers.
Challenges Remain
While travel sentiment is positive, certain challenges persist. 15% of respondents remain worried about their overall financial situation, reflecting the ongoing economic uncertainty. The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war (13% concerned) and tensions in the Middle East (9% concerned) also weigh on the minds of some travelers. While worries about extreme weather events have decreased, 10% still express concern. Additionally, 9% worry about potential travel disruptions from strikes or staff shortages, and another 9% are anxious about overcrowding at their chosen destinations.
Embrace the Travel Boom
The strong travel sentiment across Europe presents a fantastic opportunity for destinations to embrace the upcoming travel boom. By catering to diverse travel choices, promoting responsible tourism, supporting local economies, and preserving cultural heritage, destinations can maximize the positive impact of this surge in travel enthusiasm.
