Unsuccessful candidates who wish to verify the integrity of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the recent Lok Sabha elections will be required to pay Rs 47,200 per EVM set, as per the standard operating procedure issued by the Election Commission. This decision follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that rejected the demand to revert to the old paper ballot system but granted unsuccessful candidates the right to seek verification of EVM microcontroller chips. Candidates may choose to verify up to 2.5% of the control units, ballot units, and VVPATs for each assembly segment. The verification process must be initiated within seven days of the declaration of results. The Election Commission has clarified that the administrative charges associated with EVM verification will be borne by the central or state government, making the process more accessible for aggrieved candidates.
