EFCC Arrests Former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika over Alleged $6.3 Million Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Hadi Sirika, in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation. Sirika is alleged to have laundered up to $6.3 million (₦8 billion) through various contracts, including the controversial Nigeria Air project.
According to reports, Sirika arrived at the EFCC’s Federal Capital Territory Command on April 23 for questioning about alleged fraudulent contracts awarded to Engirios Nigeria Limited, a company owned by his brother. The EFCC is investigating the aviation ministry for conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.
The former minister’s arrest is part of a two-month investigation into his activities. His brother was arrested in February in connection with the case and is reportedly assisting the EFCC.
Sirika is specifically accused of awarding four contracts to his brother, who is a deputy director on level 16 in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. The contracts include constructing a terminal at Katsina Airport, establishing a fire truck maintenance center at the same airport, procuring lifts and air conditioners for Aviation House in Abuja, and purchasing aircraft and a simulator for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology.
Despite receiving payments, no work has been done on any of these projects. President Bola Tinubu had earlier ordered the suspension of the Nigeria Air project due to alleged non-transparency.
Sirika will be arraigned in court next Tuesday in connection with the alleged fraud. The EFCC continues to investigate the case, and further arrests are expected.
