In 2013, he woke up to find an 8-foot-long crocodile beneath his bed at the Humani lodge. After the attack, Whitall was airlifted to Harare for emergency surgery. His wife, Hannah Stooks Whittall, shared the news of the incident on social media, expressing gratitude for the medical staff who treated him. She revealed that her husband had lost a significant amount of blood during the attack.
