Due to the ongoing heatwave in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), along with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, has cautioned that certain areas in Kollam, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts may experience heat wave conditions. From April 28th to May 2nd, 2024, Palakkad district is likely to see maximum temperatures around 41°C, while Kollam and Thrissur districts are expected to reach around 40°C. Other districts, including Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Kannur, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kasaragod, and Thiruvananthapuram, are forecast to reach temperatures around 37-38°C, which is 3 to 5°C above normal. The IMD has also noted that excluding hilly regions, Kerala’s districts are projected to endure hot and humid weather conditions during this period. Furthermore, the possibility of heat wave conditions in specific locations within Kollam, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts is also high. According to the IMD, Kalaikunda in West Bengal and Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest temperatures of 45.8°C and 44.9°C, respectively, on April 27th. The department has issued a severe heatwave alert for the country’s East and South Peninsular areas until April 30th. Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in states like West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh have also been cited as reasons for issuing the warnings. The IMD has stated in a statement that from April 30th, heat wave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely to persist in many parts of Gangetic West Bengal, some areas of Odisha, and isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
