The Dallas Cowboys are considering bringing back former running back Ezekiel Elliott, according to CBS Sports HQ senior insider Josina Anderson. Elliott, who was once a fan favorite in Dallas, spent the 2023 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being released by the Cowboys.
Elliott’s return would address the Cowboys’ need for a starting running back after losing Tony Pollard to free agency. The team’s current depth chart at the position includes Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis.
Elliott, who turns 29 in July, had a down season in 2023, recording career lows in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, carries, and yards per carry. However, he has a proven track record of success, earning three Pro Bowl selections in his first four seasons with the Cowboys and leading the NFL in rushing yards twice.
Elliott’s release by the Cowboys in 2023 was a cost-cutting move, but his departure left a void in the team’s backfield. His return would bring experience and leadership to a young Cowboys team.
The Cowboys have the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but they may opt to address other needs with that selection if Elliott is re-signed. Elliott’s return would also take some pressure off the Joneses to select a running back early in the draft.
