Fallout Magic: the Gathering Crossover Breaks Records as ‘Probably’ Most Successful Commander Set Ever

The Fallout Magic: the Gathering crossover collection has soared to extraordinary heights, likely becoming the most successful Commander set in the franchise’s history, according to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks. This remarkable achievement was disclosed during the company’s Q1 2024 earnings call, where Cocks attributed the set’s triumph to its exceptional reception among players.

However, Cocks emphasized that Commander sets are typically smaller in scale than premier sets, necessitating adjustments in comparisons. Despite this distinction, Cocks acknowledged Fallout’s significant contribution to the overall health of Magic: the Gathering, which has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels of engagement. This resurgence is attributed in part to the Fallout crossover’s success, as well as the recent release of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander set.

Hasbro’s Magic crossovers fall under the company’s Universes Beyond banner, which encompasses previous collaborations with renowned franchises such as Stranger Things, Tomb Raider, Warhammer 40,000, and Evil Dead. Cocks expressed confidence that upcoming crossovers with Final Fantasy and Marvel will achieve similar levels of success, potentially rivaling the heights reached by the Lord of the Rings collaboration.

”I think Final Fantasy and Marvel are going to be pretty significant sets,” Cocks said. ”I would put them in the same league, at least, as what we saw with Lord of the Rings.”

Cocks highlighted the immense popularity of Marvel and anticipated that the partnership with The Walt Disney Company would yield multiple sets. Additionally, he emphasized the strong resonance of Final Fantasy in North America, Europe, and particularly in Japan, where sales are expected to surpass those of the Lord of the Rings collaboration.

The Fallout Magic crossover brought a plethora of iconic characters and elements from the beloved video game series to life as collectible trading cards. Notable inclusions included the ever-loyal Dogmeat and the fierce Caesar, who ruled New Vegas with an iron fist. Other highlights referenced Mr. House, Feral Ghouls, Deathclaws, V.A.T.S., radiation, Nuka-Cola, and more.

The Fallout series has expanded its reach beyond video games, with the Magic collaboration introducing card versions of its iconic faces. Additionally, Bethesda ventured into the realm of television with its Fallout show on Amazon Prime. This diversification of the franchise has further solidified its popularity and broadened its appeal to a wider audience.
