A family in Canada was shocked and left with unanswered questions after receiving the wrong body following the sudden death of their father in Cuba. Faraj Jarjour, 68, from Montreal, was on vacation with his daughter Miriam and son Karam when he passed away on March 22nd in Varadero, Cuba. The family had made arrangements to repatriate his body back to Canada, paying over $18,000 for the process. However, upon receiving the casket, they discovered it contained the remains of a different man. Miriam Jarjour, Faraj’s daughter, expressed her anguish and confusion, stating, “Up until now, we have no answers. Where is my father?” The family was reportedly left waiting next to the body for eight hours after Jarjour’s death, due to a lack of arrangements by the authorities. They then returned to Canada under the impression that their father’s body would be sent to Montreal. Despite repeated emails to officials, the family has been unable to locate Jarjour’s body. The body of the stranger, who was reportedly much younger than Jarjour, has now been sent back to his country. Patrice Chavegros, vice-president of marketing for Urgel Bourgie funeral home, where Jarjour’s funeral was scheduled to be held, expressed sympathy for both the Jarjour family and the family of the deceased stranger, acknowledging the impact this error has had on their grieving processes. Global Affairs Canada has confirmed the death of a Canadian citizen in Cuba and extended condolences to the family while providing consular assistance. The family remains heartbroken and appeals for help in finding their father’s body, emphasizing their sadness not only over his death but also over the uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts.
