Family Travel Dilemma: Flying with Children vs. Missing Sister’s Graduation

My family and I are facing a difficult decision. My sister is graduating with her Ph.D. this summer in another state. We have a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old. Flying with the whole family would be a challenge, especially with our younger child. I’d like to bring our older child, who is close with her aunt, but my wife wants to be there for our older child’s first airplane flight. She acknowledges that it’s a selfish desire. Should we travel as a family, despite the inconvenience? Or should I attend the graduation solo? I don’t believe flying with a 3-year-old is the momentous occasion my wife perceives it to be. However, if the flight is short and direct, I’m willing to take the whole family. Otherwise, I suggest I go alone.
