Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update will introduce significant changes, including the controversial addition of a new app. However, amidst these new features, Microsoft has announced that the update will also remove three iconic apps that have been part of Windows for years: WordPad, Cortana, and Tips.
Cortana’s Demise and AI’s Rise
Cortana, the virtual assistant introduced in Windows 10, will no longer be available as a standalone app in Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft, however, emphasizes that Cortana will remain integrated within other applications, such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and Teams Rooms. This move aligns with Microsoft’s AI-centric strategy, as the company emphasizes the full-screen version of Copilot as Cortana’s successor. Copilot, akin to the recently announced ChatGPT Mac app, will provide enhanced AI capabilities.
WordPad’s Retirement
WordPad, a basic text editor that has been a Windows staple since Windows 95, will no longer receive updates or new features in Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft encourages users to transition to Microsoft Word or Windows Editor for more advanced document handling. While the reason for WordPad’s removal is not explicitly stated, it may be related to Microsoft’s focus on streamlining its software offerings and encouraging users to adopt more robust alternatives.
Tips App’s Phase-Out
The Tips app, which provides guidance on new Windows features, will continue to receive updates until its eventual removal from Windows 11. Microsoft has not provided a specific timeline for its discontinuation.
Other Notable Removals
In addition to WordPad, Cortana, and Tips, the Windows 11 24H2 update will also remove VBScript, a legacy programming language. VBScript will become an on-demand feature, enabled by default, but will eventually be phased out. Microsoft encourages users to migrate to more modern programming options like PowerShell and JavaScript.
Hardware Requirements and New Features
The upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update will introduce several hardware requirements centered around SSE4.2 (Streaming SIMD Extensions 4.2) processor support. It will also bring support for Wi-Fi 7, the latest evolution in wireless networking, enhancing connectivity and performance.
