Fashion Designers Share Their Most Memorable Runway Shows

Every fashion enthusiast has their favorite fashion show – the one that left a lasting impression, whether it was the captivating outfits, the breathtaking staging, or a performance that simply stole the show. Here at Vogue, we often find ourselves reminiscing about the shows that have etched themselves into our memories.

But who better to ask about their most cherished runway moments than the designers themselves? These are the individuals who create the eight-minute spectacles we all adore, season after season. So, we posed two simple questions to a diverse group of designers: “What is the most memorable runway show you’ve worked on?” and “What is your favorite runway show by another designer?”

While some designers, like McQueen and Helmut Lang, highlighted collections from the same brands, others unveiled surprisingly unique favorites. Read on to discover the captivating responses from all 26 designers.

1. Marc Jacobs

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“It’s tough to pick just one, but the fall/winter 2020–21 show we did with Carol Armitage, right before the pandemic, was something I’m really proud of. I remember saying at the time, ‘It doesn’t matter if this is the last show we do.’

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel fall/winter 2018–19 show. It wasn’t necessarily his greatest show or collection ever, but Karl rarely invited other designers to his shows. It was an honor to be there as a guest. I loved everything he did for Chanel.”

2. Glenn Martens (Y/PROJECT)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The Y/Project men’s fall/winter 2019–20 collection presented at Pitti Uomo. We invited more than 7,000 people from across Florence, from the fashion industry to museums and schools. The show took place in the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Tuscany and was timed to begin at sunset. We gave everyone a tiny little flashlight. Like a Joan Jett moment, they wandered through the space to encounter masterpieces like the cathedral and the cloister frescoes, and ancient Florence itself—lit only by their tiny flashlights. The show itself began two hours later so everyone could spend time exploring. And in the darkness, when they finally came together in the main square, they had to use their flashlights to see the models. It was a true community experience, and as the thousands of tiny flashlights illuminated the runway, it was incredibly magical.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“John Galliano’s Dior spring/summer 2007 couture collection, *Madame Butterfly*. It was absolutely perfect. It was a time when fashion wasn’t about product or engagement, but about pure beauty.”

3. Sabato De Sarno (GUCCI)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“My debut collection for Gucci was the most memorable runway show I’ve ever worked on. The show turned out exactly as I had envisioned, and it was incredible. The best part was that I was working with an entirely new team. Their energy and dedication to the collection were extraordinary. It was the first time in my career that I felt so deeply shaken and moved by the experience. The combination of creativity, teamwork, and pure passion will remain etched in my memory forever.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“My favorite show by another designer was the Atelier Versace fall/winter 1997–98 couture collection. It was the first runway show I ever saw. I was 14 years old. A week later, Gianni Versace was tragically murdered. As a result, this turned out to be his last couture show. That show is very special to me. My admiration for him was already immense, but this show cemented it. It was full of energy, daring designs, and true elegance, and it had a big impact on me. Gianni will always be in my heart, and that collection is forever etched in my mind as a moment of great artistry and profound loss. It inspired me to pursue a creative path and made me realize that fashion has the power to evoke emotion and power.”

4. Anna Sui

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“Probably the spring/summer 1994 show when ‘The Trinity’ [Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Linda Evangelista] walked in the baby doll dresses. That moment when they stopped on the runway, they just did it. They made it up on the spot!”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“My favorite runway show is Prada spring/summer 2008. I loved the beautiful fairy prints by James Jean, as well as the iconic flower heels and Art Nouveau shoes! It was such a dreamy collection, otherworldly.”

5. Simone Rocha

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The Jean Paul Gaultier couture show I just did as a guest designer will stay with me forever… Such a wonderful, inspiring experience. It’s very clear in my mind, and it will stay there forever.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“It’s very hard to choose, but there are two shows I would have loved to have seen in person: McQueen’s spring/summer 2001 show, *Voss*, and Comme des Garçons fall/winter 2005–06. *Voss* had a performance in which the glass box shattered and then a nude artist [the writer, Michel Oory] was there lying down with breathing tubes and a mask. And Comme des Garçons’s ‘Broken Bride’ show was one I would have loved to see. I’ve always loved the clothes from that show.”

6. Peter Mui (ALAÏA)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“I loved last season’s Alaïa show because it was so representative of what I think luxury fashion should be.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I can’t pick just one…There are so many. But I’m so inspired by Helmut Lang spring/summer 1994, Raf Simons spring/summer 1999, John Galliano fall/winter 1994–95, and Alaïa spring/summer 2002. All of them really moved me and made me dream. They are all so important to me. They changed me.”

7. Tory Burch

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The spring/summer 2024 show in the Gilded Age Center at the American Museum of Natural History was extraordinary because it was a fantastical setting that didn’t feel like Earth. Jean Ganz’s whimsical interiors were the perfect backdrop for the retro-futuristic curves of the looks and the modular, tailored pieces.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I was lucky enough to attend Yves Saint Laurent’s last couture show in 2002 at the Centre Pompidou. It was an ultimate farewell collection, a celebration of his signatures and revolutionary designs—Le Smoking, safari jackets, bias-cut gowns, odes to Matisse and Lalan —and the sheer dresses. Saint Laurent’s impact on the industry is immeasurable. He created trends, broke boundaries, and constantly reinvented fashion and himself. And he always managed to beautifully capture the sensual allure and strength of women.”

8. Marine Serre

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The most memorable runway show I have ever worked on is *Marée Noire*, the show from September 2019. We did it outdoors in a space right next to the Auteuil racecourse, in the suburbs of Paris. It was an intense moment, with unstable weather. It was actually stormy, which added a nice backdrop to the show as it felt apocalyptic and reflected a sense of urgency about climate change. *Marée Noire* means ‘oil spill,’ so it was the perfect setting for Mother Nature to be a part of the performance. The show felt both apocalyptic and hopeful for change. It was surprisingly well-received. *Marée Noire* was a turning point in my career and a defining moment when fashion and environmental awareness intersected so powerfully.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“My favorite show by another designer is McQueen’s fall/winter 2009–10 collection, *The Horn of Plenty*. This show was truly groundbreaking. It was set in a giant junkyard, filled with props from the house’s past runway shows. The models wore broken car parts and discarded rubble as headpieces. It was a powerful and visual critique of consumerism, using trash as treasure. This approach of re-constructing waste and highlighting the issues of overproduction and surplus in the fashion industry really resonated with me. It aligns with my own approach to fashion. I’m consistently inspired by McQueen’s ability to merge strong visuals with poignant and powerful messages.”

9. Catherine Holstein (KHAITE)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“I’ve only worked on my own shows, so I’d say the recent fall/winter 2024–25 collection. I really enjoy collaborating with my husband, and I feel like he pushes me.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“Two come to mind immediately. John Galliano’s fall/winter 1994–95 show was so emotive, dark, moody, and intricate, but it was simple at the same time. There was a sense of nostalgia, introducing brand new proportions and cutting. A little Japanese, a little Italian, and of course, a bit of vaudeville. It was dramatic. That’s why I love shows and why I love fashion. You see shows like that and you feel like you are doing something worthwhile. I recently watched his documentary, and it’s even more shocking and genius knowing that show came at a time when he was at his lowest. The other one I love is McQueen’s spring/summer 2001 collection. Frankly, it was just brutal. The concept was difficult and uncomfortable, but the execution was impeccable. The darkness. The setting. The beauty of the ending. The glass shattering at the end is unbelievable! You can’t do a show like that today. [McQueen] was incredibly brave. That’s how you really get to know a designer; they don’t tell you who they are, they show you. It’s magic.”

10. Hilary Taymour (COLLINA STRADA)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The Collina Strada spring/summer 2020 collection, ‘Thank You Very Much for Helping Me,’ was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. We shut down an entire block in Manhattan and, with the help of the Misfits Market, set up a farmers market on the street. It was all outdoors, and it went all day long. People were stopping and watching the show, coming up to talk to us, and it was just a truly magical experience to see people outside of the fashion industry enjoying it. It was a very inclusive experience, a show for everyone. After the show, we opened the market up to the public for a ‘shoppable’ experience, where everyone could get free food. It was a riot! I wanted oranges, but by the time I got there, there was only one onion left. [Laughs] And then, true to the Collina community, everyone who came posted what they cooked with the things they got at the market. I think it was a collection that really elevated the Collina show level.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I have so many favorites for different reasons, it’s really hard to choose just one. But the first that comes to mind is Prada spring/summer 2008. This collection was formative for me in my fashion career. It was one of the most influential collections I’ve seen as a designer. I loved the fairy and floral elements, and the large-scale wallpaper created by James Jean and the projections that were used in the venue felt so modern. It was a show that opened my eyes to new possibilities in fashion.”

11. Julien Dossena (RABANNE)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“Probably the Louis Vuitton cruise 2018 show in Kyoto. I was traveling through Japan at the time, and to see Nicola [Ghesquière] create that vision with such strong women and incredible looks in such a special place, the Miho Museum, was truly an amazing spectacle.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I remember being really impacted by Helmut Lang’s shows in Paris at the Espace Commine when I was a kid. It was the show where Amber Valletta wore a simple T-shirt with a tiny skirt with an extreme long train. The music, the excitement of the audience, the true sense of newness that Lang was proposing, for me, embodied the ideal fashion show moment in time. I still remember it.”

12. Patrick DiCaprio & Bryn Taubensee (VAQUERA)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

* Patrick DiCaprio (PDC): “My favorite Vaquera show was fall/winter 2016–17. It was the first collection Bryn and I did together. That year, everyone was making everything about ‘collaboration’ and ‘creativity,’ and it felt like the end of an era in a way for the New York fashion scene. There was such hope and excitement back then. We did the show at the infamous China Chalet, a Chinese restaurant and banquet hall that was a common party venue. We told the models to walk however they wanted, to express themselves. Models were smoking, kissing, running through the venue, taking their time to look at the audience. They were interacting with the guests who were seated at the restaurant booths. This show felt like the beginning of the Vaquera story of joy and revolution, so it has a special place in my heart.”

* Bryn Taubensee (BT): “My favorite show was fall/winter 2017–18. That was the first time we got covered in *Vogue Runway*, and it felt like we finally ‘made it.’ Looking back, we were very young and rough around the edges. But that’s what was great about it. We hardly had anything wearable or anything that sold, but it was pure passion and expression. We were still with Claire and David back then, so we were designing as a team of four. You can tell from the collection that many perspectives went into it, which also made it so dynamic. That collection featured two of our most iconic pieces: the Tiffany & Co. jewelry pouch dress and the American flag dress.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

* PDC: “My favorite show by another designer was Undercover spring/summer 2004, where they only cast identical twins. Each pair of twins walked out, and one would wear a ‘normal’ look, and the other would wear a distorted version of what the other twin was wearing. A checkered suit that melted off the body, lapels and shoulder seams that jutted out from the silhouette, undone necklines. I think the collection reflected the effect of body dysmorphia. How we see others is defined by how we see ourselves, and a distorted mirror only reflects a false image. It was also a show that called for empathy and peace. At the finale, the models came out wearing shirts that said things like ‘Violence invites violence,’ ‘Silly to kill or die,’ and ‘Who wants to be a soldier?’ To distort yourself is a form of harm. What is more devastating than war?”

* BT: “Not a real designer, but I love the nude fashion show at the end of *Pret-a-Porter* [1994]!”

13. Maria Cornejo (ZERO + MARIA CORNEJO)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“Definitely the Zero + Maria Cornejo spring/summer 2020 show. We don’t do runway shows anymore, so it’s our ‘last show’ for the brand. It was in September 2019 on the High Line at the Standard, and we had the most beautiful sunset. The collection was inspired by the British drama *Victoria* [2016].

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“The Issey Miyake fashion show, ‘Issey Miyake and Twelve Black Girls,’ where Grace Jones was in it. It was such an empowering show, and Grace was so captivating. It still stays with me! The show was so beautiful and, at that time, unbelievably groundbreaking. It reminds me also of the Richmond Cornejo campaign for the brand that was shot in Tokyo with Naomi Campbell when she was 14 years old.”

14. Erdem Moralioglu (ERDEM)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“Vivienne Westwood Red Label spring/summer 2000. I was an intern, but I was captivated by Vivienne and Andreas creating a whole world. My favorite show for my own brand, Erdem, would probably be the spring/summer 2015 collection. It was based on Marianne North, a Victorian botanical painter, and we built a jungle greenhouse in the middle of a warehouse in London. You could feel the humidity and smell of the greenhouse when the first models came out; for a moment, everyone in the room felt transported somewhere else.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I have two that I’ve always loved. One is Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 1995 runway show. *Fin de Siècle* was a brilliant collection, so beautiful and full of Parisian and ’90s elements that felt like *Death in Venice* [1971]. At the end, Madonna came out wearing a slip dress pushing an antique pram. It was genius! The second was Yohji Yamamoto’s spring/summer 1999 collection, which was a wedding-themed show. It was so clever and poetic, the way the dresses transformed on the runway and the models peeled off layers of their clothes. It was truly beautiful and otherworldly.”

15. Zoe Latta & Mike Eckhaus (ECKHAUS LATTA)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

* Zoe Latta (ZL): “The fall/winter 2016–17 collection at MoMA PS1 [a branch of the Museum of Modern Art]. We were really green, the backstage was in the museum, and it was a blizzard. The models had to walk in wearing emergency blankets. The runway was a spiral, and pictures were taken when the models reached the center of the room. We thought no one would come because of the weather, and Mike and I were outside in the snow the whole time, watching to make sure the models stayed warm. We got to the finale, and we realized that the show was packed, and there was a line going down the street.”

* Mike Eckhaus (ME): “Other than Eckhaus Latta… Something by ThreeASFOUR. I interned there in the summer after my freshman year, and then I worked on every season after that. It’s not like I can say it’s my favorite show from that time, but it felt very ‘fashion’ to me, the whole process of putting it together, making it happen. I was lucky to be able to help out, in any way I could. In high school, I interned at *The Daily* and would skip class just to go to as many shows as I could. I particularly remember ThreeASFOUR’s show in Daichi Project because the models were standing on a revolving platform. It was packed. Really cool. And the people who came to the shows were always dressed in really amazing, avant-garde outfits. I also vividly remember the fragrance-filled Kiehl’s gift bags. I had never heard of Kiehl’s before, and I was obsessed with the perfume in the bag. It was the only time I ever got two gift bags… I recently discovered that there’s a mini version of the same scent in Zoe’s collection.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

* ZL: “Dries Van Noten fall/winter 2008–09. It’s a show that changed my life and made me want to work in fashion. They revived an old rotary wax printing technique from the 1930s to create new Technicolor textiles. It was the perfect collection for me at the time. I’ve never seen a collection like it.”

* ME: “I don’t have one. There are a few shows that, for better or worse, have shaped me, and they all have a very personal meaning that I keep close to my heart. It’s like asking someone with children, who their favorite child is. It’s a lot.”

16. Isabel Marant

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The most memorable show was the spring/summer 2021 show with the dance collective [La]Horde. It was a beautiful experience to create with them during that time. It was full of energy and love.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 2013 couture show is one of my favorites. It was amazing, not only for the interpretation of the clothes and the theme but also the energy of the place. Everyone was having so much fun!”

17. Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough (PROENZA SCHOULER)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

* Jack McCollough (JM): “When I look back on past collections, I often feel like I’m looking through old childhood albums. It brings up a lot of emotions. Nostalgia. Heartbreak. Embarrassment. There’s a lot of heartbreak and cringe when you see shows from tough times or ones that didn’t work. Objectively, it’s hard to look back. But trying to be as objective as possible, I’d say the fall/winter 2015–16 collection stands out to me. It was an incredibly liberating creative process for that season. We were inspired by Robert Morris, specifically his works that use cut felt, and we wanted to bring that effortless energy to our own pieces. The first few fittings went without any sense of what the final shape would be. Instead, we started with classic shapes and simple silhouettes, and we cut into the looks with scissors, letting the fabric drape in random shapes. That approach brought freedom to the process and led to unexpected pieces. We continue to tap into that sense of liberation in how we work today.”

* Lazaro Hernandez (LH): “For us, every show is memorable for one reason or another, but the spring/summer 2022 collection stands out as a recent highlight. It was our first show coming out of the pandemic, and it felt very much like we might never be able to do a big show again. We were able to secure Little Island, which had just opened to the public, with the help of some dear friends. It was the perfect location for the mood at the time, where everyone was still a bit hesitant about being inside in a large group of people, and because it was outdoors, we were able to invite a few hundred New Yorkers for the first time. It was a show timed for sunset, and all of the people we work with came together for the first time in over a year. It felt really defiant, and in a lot of ways, necessary. The energy was electric. It’s a show that both of us hold dear.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

* JM: “Yohji Yamamoto spring/summer 1999. Back then, you didn’t have access to information and details about collections as quickly as you do now. My first encounter with this collection wasn’t through images or show videos, but in the Yohji Yamamoto store on Grand Street in New York. It was after the collection arrived in the store, and I spent hours poring over each look, checking the inside and outside. I vividly remember the staff coming to tell me they were closing, and I was still in the store. I had been there for hours. Months later, when I finally saw the show video, my excitement only amplified. The fusion of midcentury couture with Yohji’s own vision of ‘deconstructed bridal wear’ absolutely captivated me. Even today, this collection remains one of the greatest in the history of contemporary fashion.”

* LH: “Helmut Lang spring/summer 2001. I was obsessed with fashion at the time, and I skipped school to go to the show. I thought I could maybe see what was going on from outside. A really sweet publicist saw me wandering around and asked me if I wanted to see the show, and she gave me a standing-room-only ticket. It was the first time I saw a real show in person. It was also one of Helmut’s most iconic moments during this time. It was so moving to me, watching it so many years ago. That impact has informed how Jack and I continue to make Proenza Schouler in so many ways. I’ll never forget it.”

18. Jonny Johansson (ACNE STUDIOS)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“Our 10th anniversary show in Paris was very satisfying. The artist Sylvie McMillan made incredible candelabras, and we used the signature Acne Studios pink bed. The show ended with a party, which was nice.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“Carol Christian Poell spring/summer 2004 show. That one was something else.”

19. Stuart Vevers (COACH)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The Coach 10th anniversary show [spring/summer 2024] was a fashion highlight in my life, a full-circle moment. I started my career in 1996 at Calvin Klein in New York. When I came back to New York as creative director at Coach, I started a creative process that looked at and reacted to different aspects of American pop culture and youth culture. It was after ten years that I finally drew inspiration from the New York I lived in as a young man. That collection was a very personal reflection of my relationship with New York and America and a culmination of my adult life. The culmination was when my 3-year-old son jumped into my arms at the finale of the show.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“My favorite show by another designer was one I was lucky enough to work on when I was at Louis Vuitton. Marc Jacobs was the artistic director, and I continue to be in awe of his creativity and true originality. For his spring/summer 2003 collection, Marc used the rainbow-colored monogram pattern he created with Takashi Murakami in a bag that was revealed in the show. He began a collaboration that would help shape modern design. It was really the first collaboration in the 21st century, in my opinion. The opening with models in matching satin dresses, all in different colors, with Murakami’s ‘Eye Love’ bags, and a wild punk soundtrack, was a moment that felt like a turning point in fashion for me.”

20. Nicolas De Felice (COURRÈGES)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“I have a lot of strong memories of shows from previous houses, but my first show for Courrèges was a crazy, dreamlike experience that I will always remember. It was during COVID, so we had to do it without an audience. We wanted to keep the same feeling as a regular show, so we shot the video in one take, live. The venue was a place I used to party at, and it had been closed for more than a year. We built a giant white box there, and most of my friends were watching the show, climbing the walls of the box. It’s been more than three years, and sometimes I still can’t believe it happened.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“It’s almost impossible to choose just one. I have been so captivated, influenced, and deeply moved by so many collections from the ’60s to today…But if I had to choose, I’d say Chalayan’s spring/summer 1998 collection. That show really moved me and taught me that a designer can express a message and a point of view through literally designing the clothes and conceptualizing the show. It’s like a language through draping. He shows that all of the elements that make up a fashion show—the sets, the music, the clothes—are interconnected and each piece is essential and complete through his work. It’s like a revolutionary poem.”

21. Michael Kors

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The most memorable one was probably the 40th anniversary show for the fall/winter 2021–22 collection. I’ve always been inspired by my hometown of New York, and it had always been a dream of mine to show on the streets of Times Square and the theater district I love. But then the pandemic and lockdown happened, and I finally got to do it. Rufus Wainwright performed live during the show, serenading the cast of iconic supermodels, including Naomi Campbell, Ashley Graham, Shalom Harlow, Liya Kebede, Helena Christensen, Paloma Elsesser, Alek Wek, Vittoria Ceretti, Karen Elson, and Carolyn Murphy. It was incredible. The collection embodied everything I’ve been about since we started in 1981: fluidity, timeless allure, and luxurious glamour.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I remember being totally struck by Halston’s spring/summer 1975 collection when I was a teenager in the ’74, obsessed with fashion. He called it ‘Skinp’ and introduced short hemlines, oversized, slouchy bags, flat shoes, and streamlined shapes, and it really captured a sporty, relaxed American feeling that still resonates with me today. It’s so timeless.”

22. Joseph Altuzarra (ALTUZARRA)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“There is probably no show more memorable than my first Altuzarra show for fall/winter 2009–10. That show wouldn’t have happened without the support of my friends, my family, and people who believed in me. We presented the collection at the Andrew Kreps Gallery, which [the owner] Kreps allowed us to borrow for the day in exchange for clothes for the gallery staff. My friends hung the lights from the ceiling, Tom Pecheux and Laurent Philippon did hair and makeup for free, the agency helped with the casting, and my mom baked cookies for the backstage snacks. We only had six pairs of shoes, so Melanie Huynh and Vanessa Traina, the stylists, and I were on our knees the whole show, helping the models change shoes as they went out on the runway. We had music blasting on a boombox on the floor, and there were no seats for the audience. I was so worried that no one was going to come, but when I came out of the backstage after the show was over, the room was packed with editors, buyers, and photographers. I pinched myself, thinking, ‘Is this a dream?’ It was an unbelievable moment. It was a show that made me feel the power of community, family, and just overwhelming love.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I’m a huge fan of Nicolas Ghesquière. Everything he does is incredibly beautiful, inspiring, and he always pushes the boundaries. His Balenciaga fall/winter 2001–02 collection may be my favorite show. I saw it on TV, and I was blown away by the collection. It was unlike anything I’d seen before. The hourglass shapes, the corseted details—it felt so modern and compelling, yet so evocative of the past. And the show felt so visionary, and my respect for him has only deepened over time because of that.”

23. Emily Adams Bode Aujla (BODE)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“My favorite show was definitely Bode’s fall/winter 2023–24 men’s runway show, *The Crane Estate*, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. This show was especially meaningful because we launched a women’s wear collection inspired by my mother and her three sisters. [For the opening] My French father spoke about love, honoring his wife who passed away a few months prior [my beloved aunt]. My husband and collaborator, Aaron Aujla, and his creative partner, Ben Bloomstein, built a Cape Cod house, a garage, and a fully landscaped yard with a peastone driveway into the theater. It was a visual reminder of my mom’s childhood and youth memories.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“This isn’t a ‘show’ in the traditional sense, but I was so influenced by Adam Kimmel’s collections from fall/winter 2008–09 through fall/winter 2010–11. I had just started studying menswear design at Parsons School of Design. I’ve always loved Ralph Lauren, but it’s always exciting to watch brands like Adam Kimmel come up and break new ground while simultaneously transcending eras.”

24. Thom Browne

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“The fall/winter 2009–10 show at Pitti Uomo. It was my first show in Europe, and it was the first time I really expressed the unique concept that’s present in all of my work. The uniformity and rigidity of the uniform. Men in a line, dressed the same, performing simple daily duties. It’s an image that still feels so relevant. The simple monotony makes the individuality of each person shine through.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“Dior’s fall/winter 2005–06 couture collection, Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel fall/winter 2005–06 couture collection, and Christian Lacroix’s fall/winter 2005–06 couture collection. These were the first shows I saw by other designers. I really learned from them how to show my collections, because these shows were more than just presenting clothes. They made people think, they made people question, they made people dream. They brought the audience into a world of pure creativity and craftsmanship, created for that moment. That’s how I thought it should be done.”

25. Victoria Beckham

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“My first runway show in Paris, for the spring/summer 2023 collection, is probably my most memorable. Paris has always been a special city for me, and to show there alongside some of the most revered names in fashion was a truly incredible achievement and a huge moment for the brand.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“I love the Marc Jacobs Louis Vuitton show inspired by Richard Prince. I love how he can draw inspiration from contemporary artists, and I admire and relate to that approach of Jacobs. He’s one of the most intellectual, glamorous, and talented people I’ve ever met, and he really understands pop culture. That’s why he’s been so relatable.”

26. Francesco Risso (MARNI)

*

Most Memorable Show Worked On:

“My most memorable show was spring/summer 2022, the first show after COVID. The whole process of creating it was moving, a time of intense reflection. Everything in the venue had stripes on it. Everyone, including the audience, was dressed in stripes. It was all about joy, which is at the core of our creative work. The joy of making clothes for people, of making people happy. That’s my joy.”

*

Favorite Show by Another Designer:

“McQueen’s dance show with Michael Clark [for the spring/summer 2004 collection]. It felt like time stood still, like I was levitating! I don’t think I have ever seen such a dramatic and beautiful fusion of different forms of expression. It’s in my blood. It’s in my heart. It will always be there.”
