FBI Investigation Concludes Missouri Black Man’s Death Was Suicide

Following an extensive investigation, the FBI has concluded that the death of Derontae Martin, a young Black man found dead in a Missouri home in April 2021, was a self-inflicted gunshot wound and not a homicide or hate crime.

Martin’s death initially ruled a suicide sparked controversy after his family and others raised doubts about the finding. A jury at a coroner’s inquest later ruled Martin’s death was by “violence,” prompting the FBI to launch an investigation.

According to Chris Crocker, acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s St. Louis division, the investigation determined that “this was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, not a homicide or a hate crime.” This finding was conveyed to Martin’s family in December 2022.

The investigation revealed that Martin had methamphetamine in his system, which can induce paranoia and irrational behavior. Toxicology reports indicate the level of methamphetamines in his system was consistent with levels often associated with extreme paranoia and even death.

FBI officials ascertained that Martin had expressed concerns about being pursued by a gang member and had been given a gun for protection. The investigation concluded that Martin shot himself in the presence of a friend who attempted to dissuade him from doing so.

The FBI emphasized the thoroughness of the investigation, which included input from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and an FBI agent specializing in hate crimes.

Despite the homeowner’s past racially insensitive social media posts, the FBI found no evidence linking those posts to Martin’s death. The investigation concluded that the homeowner was present at the party but was on the main floor of the house when the gunshot was heard.

The findings of the FBI investigation have brought some closure to Martin’s family, who have been grappling with his death and seeking answers. However, the tragedy highlights the persistent issue of racial injustice and the need for continued efforts to address it effectively.
