Ahmedabad: A woman police constable serving at Dhandhuka police station attempted suicide there on Sunday over the alleged torture of her husband by a police inspector.
Sources in Dhandhuka police said constable Renuka Ghanshyambhai attempted suicide after her husband was held in a bootlegging case. A video showing a police inspector belting a man had gone viral on Monday.
The inspector in question, S V Chaudhary of Dhandhuka police, said that one Kaushal Adesara had been caught for ferrying liquor bottles on Sunday. “Adesara is Renuka’s husband and had been caught in various prohibition cases in the past. Renuka had also been booked in a case of assault filed in 2021. That complaint had been filed at Dhandhuka police station, where she is currently working,” said Chaudhary.
On Chaudhary belting a man in police custody, he claimed that he did not beat Adesara. He then said he had beaten some other accused.
Adesara was shifted to a hospital in Dhandhuka and her condition is said to be stable.
