FIATA Endorses IATA Cargo Handling Manual for Enhanced Air Cargo Efficiency

In a move that promises to revolutionize the air cargo industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and FIATA, the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, have announced a major partnership. FIATA has officially endorsed the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM), a comprehensive set of standardized procedures for handling air cargo. This endorsement follows a year of collaborative discussions, reviews, and meticulous cooperation between the two organizations.

The ICHM establishes a framework of uniform procedures for airlines, ground handling agents (GHAs), and freight forwarders. By adhering to these standardized guidelines, all stakeholders in the cargo handling process can align their operations, streamlining procedures and enhancing efficiency throughout the entire supply chain. This shared commitment to standardization brings numerous benefits to the global economy, improving service for millions of businesses and individuals that rely on air cargo for their operations.

Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, highlighted the significance of FIATA’s endorsement, stating, “FIATA’s endorsement of the ICHM supports IATA’s goal of creating a safer, more efficient air cargo industry. Standardization of procedures reduces risks, enhances operational performance, and improves efficiency. Importantly, this brings enormous benefits to the global supply chain and the millions of businesses and people that depend on it.”

Stéphane Graber, FIATA Director General, emphasized the collaborative nature of this initiative, stating, “FIATA has worked closely with IATA in reviewing the ICHM, providing valuable input to ensure that it addresses the specific needs of freight forwarders of all sizes around the world, including the SMEs. The result is a set of standardized procedures that will enable faster, more efficient processes, while also improving service to shippers.”

The ICHM’s endorsement underscores the shared commitment of IATA and FIATA to prioritize safety and security throughout the air cargo handling process. This joint initiative, driven by a dedication to operational excellence, marks a new era of collaboration, bringing together key stakeholders under a unified set of global standards. The result promises to significantly improve efficiency, safety, and cost savings across the entire air cargo industry.
