Fiji Launches Comprehensive Sustainable Tourism Framework, Setting Regional Benchmark

Fiji’s commitment to sustainable development in tourism has taken a significant leap forward with the launch of the Fiji National Sustainable Tourism Framework. This comprehensive strategy is more than just a document; it represents a unified vision for the future of Fiji’s tourism industry, designed to benefit local communities, government partners, and the private sector.

The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) has commended the collaborative efforts of the Fijian Government, the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, and industry stakeholders in creating this Framework. SPTO CEO, Mr. Cocker, emphasized the Framework’s development as a cross-sectoral endeavor, both regionally and internationally, aiming to surpass expectations for sustainable tourism.

Mr. Cocker highlighted the importance of the Framework in fostering respectful engagement with Fijian values and customs, ensuring visitors understand the privilege of experiencing Fiji’s unique cultural and natural heritage. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the NZ-funded SPTO Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework and its four key goals, setting a regional benchmark for sustainable tourism practices.

The Framework marks the first alignment with the regional goals of SPTO and the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy. It provides a platform for all tourism stakeholders in Fiji to contribute to the industry’s sustainable growth, guaranteeing benefits for the environment and the Fijian people.

SPTO expressed gratitude for Fiji’s leadership and support in hosting regional tourism events, such as the upcoming South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) 2024 and 2025 in Nadi. These events are pivotal in advancing sustainable tourism across the Blue Pacific, showcasing Fiji’s dedication to fostering regional collaboration and sustainable development within the tourism sector.
