Fiji’s Tourism Sector Poised for Global Impact: $16 Trillion Contribution by 2034

Fiji’s tourism industry is set to make a remarkable impact on the global economy, with forecasts predicting a $16 trillion contribution and the creation of 449 million jobs worldwide by 2034. This bold projection was shared by Fiji’s Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, during the launch of HOTEC 2024 at the Sheraton Resort in Nadi.

Gavoka emphasized the Fijian government’s strong commitment to supporting local tourism businesses, underscoring their essential role in driving economic growth. Currently, tourism contributes 40% to Fiji’s GDP, showcasing its significance. Visitor numbers have surged by 7% compared to last year, paving the way for a bright future.

Brent Hill, CEO of Fiji Tourism, expressed optimism about welcoming one million visitors by the year’s end, which is expected to generate $4 billion in gross tourism receipts, further enhancing the sector’s economic clout.

Hill also noted the changing preferences of Generation Z travelers, who seek eco-friendly and authentic experiences. In response, Fiji’s tourism sector is embracing sustainable practices and offering immersive cultural encounters. The rise of digital payments and the integration of artificial intelligence are also transforming the industry landscape.

Soraya Marama, Chairperson of the HOTEC organizing committee, highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism as the industry prepares for the upcoming 29th Conference of Parties. HOTEC 2024 reflects this commitment, featuring activities such as cooking classes and discussions on eco-friendly tourism practices to promote responsible tourism.

This year’s HOTEC trade show serves as a crucial platform for connecting local and international businesses, fostering collaboration and innovation. The event aims to guide Fiji’s tourism industry towards sustainable growth, ensuring its prosperity and influence on the global stage.
