Maharashtra Police Registers FIR Against Individual for Uploading AI-Generated Political Video featuring Ranveer Singh
Maharashtra Police’s cyber cell has registered an FIR against an individual, referred to as ‘X user,’ for uploading a manipulated video featuring actor Ranveer Singh endorsing a political party. The video, which was uploaded from the netizen’s ‘X handle,’ was created using AI technology and featured Ranveer Singh praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The FIR was registered following a complaint by Ranveer’s father, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, who alleged that the video was extracted from Ranveer’s recent interview in Varanasi and was manipulated to make it appear as though Ranveer was endorsing the political party.
The FIR stems from concerns about the proliferation of deepfake videos, especially during the political season. Deepfake videos are created using AI technology to manipulate existing videos and make it appear as though the individuals in the videos are saying or doing something they did not actually say or do. This incident raised concerns about the potential for deepfake videos to be used to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion during elections.
Ranveer’s father has vehemently denied the actor’s affiliation with any political party. The FIR, encompassing relevant IPC sections and provisions of the IT Act, underscores the severity of the offense and highlights the potential impact of deepfake technology on public opinion. This event echoes a similar occurrence involving actor Aamir Khan, who also filed an FIR regarding an AI-generated video promoting the same political party, highlighting the far-reaching implications of deepfake technology in shaping public opinion.
