A devastating fire swept through a poultry farm in S. Mottur village, Vellore district, on Wednesday, killing more than 2,500 chickens. The blaze, which is suspected to have been sparked by an electrical short circuit, quickly engulfed one of the four tin-roofed sheds housing the birds. According to the farm owner, K. Santhosh, the fire erupted around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, and before he could summon help from neighbors, the entire shed, measuring approximately 300 square feet, was engulfed in flames. Mr. Santhosh managed to escape unhurt and alerted the fire and rescue services, who arrived promptly from Gudiyatham town and extinguished the fire after a grueling hour. The fire was confined to the single poultry shed, and the remaining three sheds were spared damage. Gudiyatham Taluk police arrived at the scene to conduct an inspection and registered a case. Initial investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit may have been the cause of the fire. The incident resulted in extensive damage to the poultry shed, equipment, and chicken feed, with the estimated loss amounting to approximately ₹10 lakh. Further investigations are ongoing, according to the police.
