Two firefighters were injured while fighting a fire at a large apartment complex in Avon on Sunday evening, which forced residents to evacuate and caused significant damage to the building.
Fire crews were called to the scene at around 6:30 p.m. after flames were spotted engulfing the porch of a third-floor unit at the Avon Place Apartment complex on Avonwood Road.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames on the exterior of the building, but they faced challenges in containing the fire that had spread into a void space between the third floor and the roof.
To reach the flames, firefighters had to cut holes in the roof, an effort that took several hours.
While no residents were injured in the blaze, two firefighters sustained minor injuries. One was treated at the scene, while the other was transported to an area hospital.
The fire prompted a large mutual aid response, with firefighters from Farmington, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Newington, Berlin, and other towns providing assistance.
The American Red Cross was on-site to help residents who had been displaced by the fire. The number of people affected has not yet been determined.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
