Southern California awoke to a taste of winter on Tuesday, with the first snowfall of the season blanketing the San Bernardino Mountains. While lower elevations received a welcome dose of rain, the higher peaks were treated to a dusting of snow, marking the official start of winter in the region.
Video captured along Highway 18 and parts of Big Bear revealed a picturesque scene of snow falling overnight, transforming the mountain landscapes into a winter wonderland. The snow, falling as wet slush, painted the mountain scenery white, creating a stark contrast against the clear blue skies.
Despite the snowfall, temperatures at the highest elevations remained relatively mild, hovering around 35 degrees. This mild weather allowed the snow to fall as wet slush, creating a less harsh wintery experience for those venturing into the mountains.
Looking ahead, the region’s mountains are expected to be sunny and breezy on Tuesday. The day will see a high of 46 degrees, offering a pleasant respite from the chilly overnight temperatures, which are forecast to dip down to a frigid 18 degrees.
As Southern Californians enjoy the first snowfall of the season, those planning to explore the mountains are advised to exercise caution, as road conditions may be impacted by the snowfall. Additionally, be sure to dress warmly and be prepared for the cold temperatures expected at higher elevations.
