A tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Lonavala, Pune, where a woman and a 13-year-old girl tourist drowned after being swept away at a waterfall near Bhushi Dam. The incident took place around 1:30 pm, prompting immediate action from the Maharashtra police and local volunteers who rushed to the scene to begin a search and rescue operation.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Pankaj Deshmukh confirmed the recovery of the bodies of the 40-year-old woman and the 13-year-old girl. However, the search continues for three other missing children: two 6-year-old girls and a 4-year-old boy. It is believed that the family was visiting the waterfall, located two kilometers away from Bhushi Dam, when they were caught in the strong currents and swept downstream.
According to the police, the continuous rainfall in the Lonavala region since early morning has caused the Bhushi Dam, a popular tourist destination, to overflow, leading to increased water flow and the formation of powerful waterfalls. Lonavala police have deployed multiple teams, including experienced local trekkers familiar with the terrain, to search for the missing children.
While the identities of the victims have yet to be confirmed, authorities are working tirelessly to locate the missing children and provide support to the affected family.
