In the bustling atmosphere of London Fashion Week, FKA twigs pulled off a feat few could imagine: an impromptu concert that left the crowd spellbound. The singer, known for her captivating blend of music and movement, was celebrating her collaboration with Swiss sportswear brand On, showcasing the autumn/winter 2024 collection.
The performance took place at The Beams, a former warehouse in East London, on the final day of Fashion Week. Guests arrived to find the venue adorned with campaign images featuring twigs striking poses mid-motion. A layer of ethereal mist enveloped the stage, adding to the otherworldly ambiance crafted by twigs herself alongside Arthur De Borman and Rafe Hamilton.
Then, the star herself emerged, her signature soft soprano voice filling the air as she launched into her single “Eusexua”. The song’s dynamics mirrored her captivating stage presence, with her vocals shifting from delicate whispers to powerful crescendos. As the energy escalated, dancers whirled and leaped across the stage, creating a dynamic forcefield around twigs.
Adding to the unique visual aesthetic, twigs and her dancers sported kinesiology tape across their arms, shoulders, and legs. This innovative element created an extra-skeletal effect, enhancing the fluidity and dynamism of their movements. “The lines over my body were designed and applied by Yaz XL,” twigs revealed to Vogue. “It’s done using kinesiology tape, and it’s something that we’ve been wanting to experiment with for a while. It kind of plays into the world that I’ve been building with Tilda [AKA MugQueens], where we maximize a look with lines and expressions over glam, and it feels really in line with my new era.”
Twigs attributed the success of the performance to the collaborative spirit of her diverse team. “The choreographer, Zoï Tatopoulos, myself and the dancers have been working really hard and pushing ourselves to take really big risks and find new, graphic, animalistic ways to move our bodies,” she explained. “Myself and each of the dancers have very different strengths and come from different backgrounds – be it classical, contemporary, hip hop, ballet. One thing I really love about bodies in particular, is the different things that they can do… finding synergy within that as a truth is always amazing.”
The unexpected concert was more than just a performance; it was a testament to FKA twigs’ artistic vision, her commitment to pushing boundaries, and her ability to transform a fashion event into a mesmerizing spectacle. It showcased her distinct musical style, innovative use of kinesiology tape, and captivating choreography, leaving the audience in awe.
