Flintoff and Vaughan Jr. Set to Follow in Fathers’ Footsteps in England U19 Tests

Fifteen years after England’s legendary duo of Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff ended their Test careers, their sons are poised to begin their own journeys in the traditional format at the age-group level. Archie Vaughan, the son of the former Ashes-winning England captain, was named in a 14-member squad for England’s under-19 team, which will face Sri Lanka in two Tests. The squad also features 16-year-old Rocky Flintoff, who has already made his international debut in youth ODIs.

The family connection runs deep within the squad, as it also includes Farhan Ahmed, the brother of current England leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, and Jaydn Denly, the 17-year-old nephew of former England batter Joe Denly. The young players will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of their famous fathers and make a mark in the world of cricket.

The England U19 team captain, Hamza Shaikh, expressed his confidence in the squad and their ability to perform well. He highlighted the valuable advice and guidance he has received from the experienced players in the team, which has boosted his leadership skills.

Archie Vaughan, an 18-year-old top-order batter and off-spinner, has already made his mark in the sport. He signed his first professional contract with Somerset earlier this season and has been part of the county’s academy set-up since 2020. Although he hasn’t yet played for Somerset’s first-team, he showcased his talent with a brilliant 83-ball 85 for Young Lions Invitational XI in a warm-up match against the England U19 ODI squad.

Meanwhile, Rocky Flintoff, a right-handed all-rounder, top-scored with 106 in the same match, further highlighting the promising talent within the England U19 squad. Vaughan and Flintoff Sr. played 48 Tests together between 1999 and 2008, leaving behind a legacy that their sons are now poised to carry forward.

The England U19 side will face Sri Lanka U19 in two Tests, with the first match being held at Wormsley from July 8-11, followed by the second at Cheltenham from July 16-19. The full squad for the series is as follows:
