Assam Devastated by Floods as Cyclone Remal Unleashes Fury
In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, heavy rains and strong winds have wreaked havoc across eight districts of Assam, affecting over 41,000 people. The Karimganj district has been the hardest hit, with over 26,400 individuals facing the brunt of the deluge. Cachar and Hailakandi districts have also been severely impacted, with 8351 and 6227 people affected respectively.
The relentless downpour has led to extensive flooding, submerging villages and damaging infrastructure. In Karimganj, 66 villages have been inundated, forcing residents to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in safer areas. The rising waters have also washed away portions of five embankments, exacerbating the situation.
Across the affected districts, 143 villages have been ravaged by the initial wave of flooding, with 336 hectares of agricultural land under water. The ASDMA has reported one fatality in Karimganj and two missing persons in Cachar.
To address the mounting crisis, the administration has established 155 relief camps and 715 relief distribution centers in the flood-hit regions. Rescue operations are underway, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local authorities working tirelessly to evacuate stranded individuals and provide assistance.
The relentless rains have also led to a surge in water levels in the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with their tributaries. Landslides have also occurred in Dima Hasao, Cachar, and Hailakandi districts, further complicating the relief efforts.
