Florence Welch on Collaborating with Taylor Swift: ‘I Almost Didn’t Think of the Scale of It’

Florence Welch, the lead singer of Florence + The Machine, has spoken about her experience of collaborating with Taylor Swift on the song ‘Florida!!!’, which appears on Swift’s new album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’. Welch said she was “honoured to be in this department” and that Swift had approached her with “a concept and a story” for the song.

“I almost didn’t think of the scale of it,” Welch said of the collaboration. “There’s the sort of bigness of [Taylor Swift the phenomenon], and then there’s the Taylor I spend time with in the studio, who is just the sweetest and most down to earth.”

Welch also hinted at a potential appearance at Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ in London. “If I was gonna do it, it would be a surprise,” she said.

‘Florida!!!’ was co-produced by Swift’s longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, who previously worked with Welch on her latest album ‘Dance Fever’ (2022). Emma Stone is also credited as a co-writer on the song.

Welch and Swift were pictured together at The 1975’s show at The O2 in London in January 2023. It is strongly believed that ’75 frontman Matty Healy is the subject of several songs on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, namely its title track and ‘The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived’ among others.
