Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill into law prohibiting the intentional release of balloons within the state. The legislation, spearheaded by State Rep. Linda Chaney, aims to combat the issue of balloon litter polluting Florida’s beaches and waterways. Chaney emphasized the importance of protecting Florida’s natural resources, stating that balloons pose a significant threat to both marine life and wildlife.
The bill garnered support from various organizations, including ocean conservation groups and cattle farmers. Both groups highlighted the dangers of balloons being mistaken for food by animals, leading to health problems and potential fatalities. Sea turtles and cattle, in particular, have been known to suffer from ingesting plastic debris that drifts into their environments.
While DeSantis initially expressed concerns about the potential for hefty fines being imposed on Florida residents, particularly children, the bill was ultimately amended to exempt children under the age of six. This modification addressed concerns about the bill’s potential for disproportionately impacting younger individuals.
Emma Haydocy, a spokesperson for the Surfrider Foundation, expressed support for the ban, emphasizing its impact on both Florida residents and the millions of tourists who visit the state annually. She highlighted the detrimental effects of balloon litter, stating that it’s undesirable for both locals and visitors.
