A FlySafair Boeing 737 made an emergency landing at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Sunday, April 21, after a wheel came off shortly after takeoff. Video footage of the incident shows smoke coming from the unprotected wheel hub as the plane landed, and passengers reported hearing a loud bang as it touched down on the runway and screeched to a stop.
Boeing has referred inquiries to FlySafair, which has not yet commented on the incident. The aircraft is a 17-year-old Boeing 737, and the airline maintains its fleet.
The incident is under investigation, and no injuries have been reported.
