Ford Motor Company’s electric vehicle sales saw a 12.2% jump in the third quarter of 2024, reaching a total of 23,509 units sold. This growth comes despite a slight dip in sales for the popular Mustang Mach-E SUV.
While the Mustang Mach-E remained Ford’s top-selling EV during the quarter, sales dropped by nearly 10% compared to the same period last year. This decline was offset by a significant surge in sales of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck and the E-Transit electric van. The Lightning saw a remarkable 104.5% increase in sales, while the E-Transit sales jumped by 13%.
Despite the overall increase in EV sales, Ford’s third-quarter figures show a 1.9% decrease compared to the previous quarter, when the company sold 23,957 electric vehicles.
Ford’s rival, General Motors, reported even stronger EV sales in the third quarter, selling 32,095 units. This success is largely attributed to the launch of new models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV, which began sales in May 2024. Ford, on the other hand, is currently facing challenges with its aging and smaller EV lineup.
In August, Ford announced the cancellation of its plans to produce a three-row electric SUV, initially slated for 2025. The company also pushed back the launch of a new electric version of its F-150 pickup truck to 2027 and announced the production of a new electric commercial van starting in 2026. Further details on Ford’s future EV strategy are expected in the first half of 2025.
As the competition in the electric vehicle market intensifies, Ford faces the challenge of expanding its lineup and enhancing its existing models to maintain its position as a leading player in the EV space.
