Foreign Interference in US Elections 2024: China and Russia Target Key Races

The 2024 US Presidential elections are fast approaching, and with them comes a surge in foreign interference. A new report from Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Centre (MTAC) has revealed a sophisticated campaign targeting key races in several states, with China and Russia leading the charge.

China’s Focus: Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee

China, through a troll network dubbed ‘Taizi Flood,’ is attempting to sway voters in Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee. Dozens of fake accounts linked to this network have been discovered on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Their targets include:

*

Barry Moore (Alabama):

Moore, a vocal critic of China, has been targeted for his pro-Israel stance. The fake accounts have used antisemitic language to discredit him.
*

Michael McCaul (Texas):

McCaul, another outspoken critic of China, is accused of ‘abusing power for personal gain’ by the Chinese troll network, although no concrete evidence is provided.
*

Senator Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee):

Blackburn’s re-election campaign has been targeted with misinformation, including claims that she received campaign donations from opioid manufacturers. The network has also been promoting Blackburn’s opponent, Representative Gloria Johnson, since October.

The report emphasizes the ‘Taizi Flood’ network’s focus on spreading disinformation and promoting opposition candidates. This network has been previously linked to China’s Ministry of Public Security, suggesting a coordinated effort from the Chinese government.

Russia’s Focus: The Harris-Walz Campaign

Meanwhile, Russian operatives are focused on undermining the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. The MTAC report details the creation of AI-enhanced deepfake videos targeting Walz, spreading false information and garnering millions of views on X. While most of these videos have received limited engagement, they demonstrate Russia’s continued reliance on both traditional and AI-generated content to manipulate US audiences and exacerbate political divisions.

The report further notes that some Russian accounts have transitioned from Telegram to X, indicating a strategic shift towards a platform where they believe they can engage with US viewers more effectively.

This alarming revelation underscores the escalating threat of foreign interference in US elections. With both China and Russia employing increasingly sophisticated tactics to influence voters, the integrity of the 2024 election is under serious threat. It remains to be seen how US authorities will respond to these challenges and safeguard the democratic process.
