Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), appeared at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to face historical sex charges. The 61-year-old politician was arrested and charged in relation to historical sexual allegations at the end of March. Donaldson arrived at the court accompanied by his solicitor but did not make any statements. Police officers attempted to keep the roadway clear during the large media presence for his arrival.
A 58-year-old woman has also been charged with aiding and abetting additional offenses in relation to the same police investigation. Donaldson resigned as DUP leader and was suspended from the party pending the outcome of the judicial process. In a letter to party officers, he made clear his intention to “strenuously contest” all charges against him. East Belfast MP and deputy leader Gavin Robinson was appointed interim party leader. Donaldson has so far remained as MP for Lagan Valley.
This development follows a string of recent events related to the DUP. The party has faced criticism for its handling of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which has led to tensions with the British government and the European Union. Additionally, the DUP has been embroiled in a leadership contest, with several candidates vying to replace Donaldson as party leader.
