Joe Zatylny, the former chief of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, has been appointed to a new role as an assistant deputy minister (ADM) or deputy managing director within the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA). This decision comes after last year’s devastating wildfire season, which highlighted the need for enhanced emergency management capabilities. The province-wide state of emergency during that time prompted the identification of this new role within AEMA.
Zatylny’s appointment was made through a competitive hiring process, and his extensive experience as fire chief for a large urban center made him the ideal candidate. The government spokesperson, Arthur Green, expressed that Zatylny’s expertise, network, and professionalism will be invaluable assets to the AEMA team, especially in preparation for the upcoming hazard season.
Zatylny had previously taken on the role of fire chief for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services in June 2020, but his resignation became effective on May 10, 2023. The reason for his departure remains undisclosed. In the meantime, David Lazenby will serve as the acting fire chief, and a national recruitment process will be initiated to find a permanent replacement.
