The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Indian winger Bhupinder Singh Rawat, who breathed his last in Surat, Gujarat on Saturday, June 29, 2024. He was 85 years old. Rawat’s demise comes after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
Rawat, a legendary winger of the 1960s and 1970s, was renowned for his lightning-fast pace and ability to weave past defenders with ease. He earned the nickname “Scooter” from adoring fans who marvelled at his agility and quick feet.
On the international stage, Rawat represented India in the 1969 Merdeka tournament in Malaysia. At the domestic level, he graced the field for prominent clubs like Delhi Garrison, Gorkha Brigade, and Mafatlal. He also proudly represented Services and Maharashtra in the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey mourned the loss, saying, “Bhupinder Singh Rawat was a classy winger and also a prolific scorer, who served the game with distinction. I extend my sincerest condolences to his family in this hour of sorrow.”
AIFF Acting Secretary General M. Satyanarayan added, “Bhupinder Singh Rawat was a skillful footballer of his time and the spectators loved to watch him play. On behalf of the Indian football fraternity, I condole his passing away.”
Rawat’s legacy will forever be etched in the annals of Indian football. His contributions to the sport, both on and off the field, will be remembered by fans and players alike.
