The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is deepening its probe into alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, with former principal Sandip Ghosh at the center of the accusations. The agency has accused Ghosh of operating a “criminal nexus” for “wrongful gains,” further solidifying its stance on the case.
Ghosh, along with two vendors and his security guard, was arrested last month amidst public outcry over the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor. The CBI’s latest submission to a special court in Alipore details the alleged criminal nexus, stating that Ghosh, in collusion with the co-accused, misused his position to illicitly benefit himself and others at the expense of the government.
The investigation reveals that Ghosh had known the two arrested vendors since his tenure at the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital between 2016 and 2018. Upon his appointment as principal of RG Kar, he allegedly brought these vendors to Kolkata and favored them in securing supply contracts for the hospital. The CBI believes that their proximity to Ghosh was the sole reason for their selection.
The agency is also scrutinizing the role of Ghosh’s security guard, who allegedly acted as a conduit between the vendors and the hospital for selling biomedical waste. Additionally, the CBI has accused Ghosh of employing an arbitrary selection process in appointing house staff, with missing signatures from committee members in the appointment records for 2022 and 2023.
Further, the investigation uncovered that while work order letters were ostensibly addressed to various hospital officers, they were never actually delivered to them. The CBI has also alleged that Ghosh favored an organization belonging to his security guard’s wife by awarding the contract for a cafe within the hospital.
This investigation continues to expose potential corruption within the medical institution, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
