Former New York Representative George Santos, who was expelled from the House and is facing federal charges, has decided to withdraw his bid for Congress in New York’s 1st District. Santos announced his withdrawal in a statement, saying he did not want his run to be seen as a reprisal against another candidate, Nick Lalota, and that he did not want to split the vote and be responsible for handing the seat to Democrats. Santos had previously announced he was leaving the Republican Party and would run his congressional comeback bid as an independent. Despite withdrawing from the race, Santos stated that he will continue to participate in public policy discussions and fight for his country at any time. He is currently facing 23 federal charges, including allegations of fraud related to COVID-19 unemployment benefits, misusing campaign funds, and lying about his personal finances on House disclosure reports. Santos has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
