Former Pakistani fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed has resigned from his position as a regional coach for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), citing widespread corruption and nepotism as the reasons for his departure. Ahmed, who served as the head coach in the Dera Ghazi Khan region, expressed deep disappointment with the state of affairs at the grass root level of Pakistani cricket.
He criticized the lack of merit in player selections, highlighting the prevalence of political interference and favoritism in decisions. Ahmed stated that his decision to work in Dera Ghazi Khan was driven by his desire to promote and develop the game at the district and regional levels. However, he found his efforts hampered by the prevailing system.
“How can Pakistan cricket improve when there is no merit in selection of players at regional level and there is so much interference and nepotism and favouritism by cricket officials?” he questioned.
Ahmed lamented that hardworking, talented players were being overlooked in favor of those with political connections. He also expressed his lack of surprise at Pakistan’s recent 0-2 loss to Bangladesh, considering the current state of the sport. “Unfortunately what I have experienced is very frustrating. A player who works hard throughout the year and is a good talent is overlooked in the final selection to pick a player who use political and other connections to get in,” he said.
He concluded by stating that even sincere coaches are powerless to effect positive change within the current system. Ahmed’s resignation highlights a serious problem within the Pakistani cricket structure, one that requires immediate attention and reform if the nation hopes to achieve success on the international stage.
