A special CBI court in Kolkata has sent former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and three others to 8-day CBI custody. The arrests were made on Tuesday, a day after the CBI’s anti-corruption branch apprehended them for alleged corruption and financial misconduct at the government-run institution. The three other accused are Biplav Singha (a vendor), Suman Hazar (a vendor), and Afsar Ali, Ghosh’s additional security.
The CBI had requested 10 days of custody for interrogation, citing the need to expose a larger nexus of corruption. However, the special CBI court granted only eight days. Doctors from B.R. Singh Hospital, Eastern Railway, conducted medical tests on Ghosh and the other accused earlier in the day.
Ghosh was under investigation for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The high court had ordered the CBI to probe the matter, leading to an official FIR being registered against Ghosh on August 24. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata suspended Ghosh’s membership amid the CBI probe.
The four accused will appear before the Special CBI Court again on September 10. This case highlights concerns about financial mismanagement and corruption within government-run healthcare institutions, raising questions about accountability and transparency.
