The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, on Monday. The arrest is in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the hospital and his potential involvement in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the institution. Ghosh was questioned for 15 days at the CBI’s Salt Lake office before his arrest.
Ghosh’s arrest follows a period of intense scrutiny and protests by junior doctors who demanded justice for the deceased trainee doctor. The protests intensified after allegations of financial irregularities and potential involvement of Ghosh in the doctor’s death surfaced.
The arrest is also connected to allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital during Ghosh’s tenure. Dr. Akhtar Ali, the hospital’s former deputy superintendent, lodged complaints of financial mismanagement on multiple occasions.
The CBI is investigating allegations that organs from unidentified bodies sent to the hospital for post-mortem were frequently sold on the black market at high prices under Ghosh’s leadership. Debasish Som, a demonstrator in the Forensic Medicine Department and a key witness in the case, was admitted to a private hospital in critical condition on Sunday. Som’s testimony is crucial to the investigation as he is believed to have knowledge of the organ trafficking scheme.
Following the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, the state government had placed Ghosh on leave. The CBI investigation is ongoing, and the arrest of Sandip Ghosh marks a significant development in the case.
