The former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Akhtar Ali, has leveled serious allegations against the institution’s former principal, Professor Dr. Sandip Ghosh. Ali claims that Ghosh was a corrupt individual who operated like a mafia, using his position of power for personal gain.
According to Ali, Ghosh engaged in various unethical practices, including failing students unfairly, demanding a 20% commission on tender orders, and siphoning money from the medical college and hospital. He further alleges that Ghosh provided alcohol to students at his guest house. Ali emphasizes Ghosh’s perceived power and influence, stating that he enjoyed significant security and held a strong position within the institution.
Ali’s accusations stem from a complaint he filed against Ghosh in 2023. He believes that Ghosh’s resignation from RG Kar Medical College was merely an attempt to avoid accountability, as he was swiftly appointed as the principal of National Medical College within eight hours of stepping down.
These allegations come amidst the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The Calcutta High Court has directed former principal Sandip Ghosh to submit a leave application following protests sparked by his rapid appointment at Calcutta National Medical College.
The investigation into the trainee doctor’s murder is now under the control of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A specialized medical and forensic team from Delhi has been deployed, and CBI members from Delhi have joined the investigation at the Central Government Offices (CGO) Complex in Kolkata. The alleged perpetrator, Sanjoy Roy, has been brought to the CGO Complex by West Bengal Police.
